One hundred years ago today

We will remember them

Ode to Remembrance

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in in our labour of the day-time;
The sleep beyond England's foam

  1. So sad that nothing's changed then isn't it? Wars are still being waged everywhere.

  2. Very sad ode. 100 years is not that long ago really. My nan was born the year the titanic went down and was 2 at the start of the the first World war. People of that generation went through so much. x

  3. Felt like it was now, sitting watching War Horse in the Lowry on Saturday. It really was the perfect weekend to see that incredible show.

    Lest we forget.

  4. I'll be taking part in the 'one light' this evening.
    As I stitched the 4 middle lines from this poem for our community centre wall hanging I gave serious thought to all that gave their lives for us and those that still do.
    love x

  5. I'm just so glad to see such a lot of events and people still interested and thoughtful of what happened 100 years ago. We must never forget and must pass it on through the generations.
