EGGS, Eggs & eggs!

Last Saturday I entered the local Flower and Produce show. I was quite miffed no-one looked at my Lemon Curd. I couldn't understand it, everyone to whom I have given my Lemon Curd to always said it was perfect - perhaps they were being polite................

The recipe comes from this book. My grandmother used to make it, my mum used to make it and mun introduced this recipe to me when I was about ten. I've been making it for years without a failure........

Well that is till now!

Lemon Meringue Pie................

..................with a soggy bottom!
I know what happened I think I mis-read the recipe and didn't put enough cornflour in, all these years of making it and this happens at the crucial moment! Oh well there is always next year! I will do better! I will do better! Imagine I have written it a hundred times!!!!
You must be asking by now where do the eggs come in to all of this? Well first of all I made an Egg Custard Tart, but instead of using two large eggs I used three egg yolks, and saved the three whites for the meringue. It became a cross between Lemon Meringue and Eaton Mess with lemons, but it tasted very good!

  1. That's a wonderful looking book! I was reading some of the other recipes in it too! I think your lemon meringue pie looks delicious and bet it tasted so even if you say it had a soggy bottom!!! x

  3. Mmm sounds yummy! We have an old stork butter recipe book that my Nan gave to my Mum when she was a teenager and we still use it to this day! Although it is a bit tatty and falling apart, it has the best cake recipes!

  4. I've got the same Stork book, but I haven't tried any of the receipes out yet. Perhaps I should have a baking day this weekend and dig the Stork out from the back fo the fridge!

  5. As Tamzin has said, our most used & favourite recipe book is our 1970's "Flop Proof Baking" by Stork - the recipes work every time - as long as you actually read them of course! ;-)

  15. Looks scrummy to me!
    This did remind me of my O'level Domestic Science exam .. all those years ago.
    I had to show the properties of eggs and so cooked Lemon meringue pie for my long suffering family.. time and time again.
    I am not sure I could do it now..

  16. These things always happen at the worst moment, don't they? I haven't cracked the lemon curd in the village show yet either. I think it's poor that no feedback is given so I don't know what was wrong with it or how to improve.
